What is Common Cause?

Common Cause is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy. They work to create an open, honest, and accountable government that serves the public interest; promote equal rights, opportunity, and representation for all; and empower all people to make their voices heard in the political process.

Why do we think this project is important?

Common Cause’s Media and Democracy Program is committed to working to ensure that our communications ecosystem achieves its potential as a key engine of democracy. Common Cause’s theory of change is to reform our media and democracy from a consolidated landscape to a more open, accessible, and diverse ecosystem. To do this, they amplify core media issues through public education, stakeholder engagement on policy and regulatory solutions, grassroots mobilization, and legal action. These strategies help trigger conversations and opportunities for reform at the local, state, and national levels. As they engage more communities and stakeholders, they will change the narrative, which will help them transform the existing landscape eroding the democratic potential of our media and communications system.
