What is Common Cause?

Common Cause is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy. They work to create an open, honest, and accountable government that serves the public interest; promote equal rights, opportunity, and representation for all; and empower all people to make their voices heard in the political process.

Why do we think this project is important?

Common Cause’s Media and Democracy Program is committed to working to ensure that our communications ecosystem achieves its potential as a key engine of democracy. This project will focus on the following campaigns: (1) promoting universal and affordable broadband for all; (2) defending an open internet; (3) fighting media consolidation and strengthening local journalism; and (4) holding social media platforms accountable. These campaigns will help build a more open, accessible, and diverse media system. The long-term goal of this project is to radically restructure the existing marketplace where large monopoly gatekeepers can dictate our access to critical services, limit the amount of independent and diverse voices communities can access, and ultimately control where we go, what we see, and how we interact online.

How is Democracy Fund Voice supporting Common Cause?

In 2022, Democracy Fund Voice approved a one-year grant of $300,000 to Common Cause’s Media and Democracy project.
